WHO WAS THAT PROPHET? In the Bible (John 1:19-21) John the Baptist, when questioned by the Pharisees, denied that he was (1) the Messiah, (2) Elijah and (3) the Prophet. John 1:19-21 (NIV): 19 Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.” 21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” The followers of Jesus (the early Christians although at that time Christianity was not yet a separate religion from Judaism) believed that he (Jesus) was the Messiah. These followers were Jews, although the majority of the Jews at that time didn’t believe in him. So John the Baptist was not the Messiah.
