A LETTER TO MY CHRISTIAN FRIENDS: THE LORD, OUR GOD, THE LORD IS ONE! In the name of ALLAH, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful. As Salaamu alaikum! (May Peace be upon you!) Most of the founders of the great religions, many of whom claimed to be prophets of GOD, only spoke about their respective (new) religion (or way of life), and did not criticize the other religions or scriptures. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) had no choice because ALLAH did so in the Qur’an. Since he was to preach the teachings of the Qur’an, he had no choice but to engage the people of other religions, especially the Jews and Christians (the “People of the Book”). THE MEANING OF TRUE WISDOM True wisdom is knowing and understanding the Truth or Reality of things, especially the meaning of existence, the origin of the Universe, and of life. It must be based on both knowledge and experiences that confirm the certainty of the subject of inquiry, or problem in hand. It is knowing what is true and what is not; what is right and what is wrong; and knowing what is the best answer or choice, if there are many choices. Wisdom cannot be based on empirical knowledge, theories and assumptions. Let us consider the most basic question that divides humanity: Does GOD exist? This question is fundamental because it leads to many other consequential questions: Was the Universe and all life in it created? Did we evolve from chimpanzees or are we descendants of the first created man ( Adam according to the Abrahamic religions )? And many more. By the opinions of their own people or followers, every one of them would have been proclaimed the greatest in history. But it is only objective and valid if we look at the opinions of those who were not their followers, so that there were no elements of bias. This does not mean that their followers could not give accurate assessments, but objective and independent inquiry require that these opinions be regarded with suspicion, and can only be included as additional information. Following various criteria of greatness, different scholars would still have different opinions about who excelled most in the different fields of human endeavour.
